《The Hurt Locker》讓Jeremy Renner成為炙手可熱的新星，接下來新的Bourne電影和眾星雲集的Avengers更將他推上巨星的行列。他準備好了嗎？等著看吧，Jonathan Dean這麼說。
With his short dirty-blond hair and effortless ease, of course Jeremy Renner should play Steve McQueen. Not the arty director of Hunger and Shame--that's an ill fit--but the 1970s Hollywood antihero who smirked his way through an awards-laden career, jumped his bike into barbed wire in The Great Escape, then went too soon. "He's the coolest human being who ever lived, but he's also the most insecure guy who ever lived," Renner says of the all-American movie star whose place, these days, would most likely be taken by an Australian. Renner is set to portray him in a biopic, and will probably win an Oscar for it.

Before all that, though, there is a lot of nonsense--two years of work in which the actor nominated for Oscars in both 2010 and 2011 will play dress-up and shoot giant lizards from the sky, "I'm not really a blockbuster guy in my heart of hearts," he says as we meet in Lodon during his biggest year yet, smiling as I read off a list that started with Mission:Impossible--Ghost Protocol last Christmas, ends with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters next January, and squeezes in the comic-book behemoth Avengers Assemble and thriller The Bourne Legacy in between.

That's more blockbusters than Bob Holness. "That's just how it turned out," Renner shrugs, with a nonchalance suggesting he's already in method for his role as McQueen. "Ideally, if I could control the future, when I get a job--or if I get a job--I probably would have tried to spread it out a little bit, but I'm more set financially, so that relieves a lot of the burden as an actor. And I now have the luxury of choosing what I do next, because I really knocked out all these big movies, movies people will actually see."

Such drive and planning suits a man on, ahem, many missions. He was in two films in 2011; he's in three this year. He is 41, making up for lost time. He may look 10 years younger and, thanks to recent action roles, have the physique of someone half his age, but his birth certificate reads January 7, 1971, so that's that. Yet unlike his peers Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg, Renner has found success only in the past three years, since Kathryn Bigelow's excellent, best picture winning 2009 bomb-disposal nailbiter The Hurt Locker gave the actor a "big, big shift". Over coffee in the Soho Hotel on a cold, foggy winter's morning, with black-and-white check shirt sleeves rolled above his shoulders, leaning out of the window smoking a Marlboro Light, he is far shorter than you'd expect for a man of such stature and action. Then again, he did spend much of The Hurt Locker in that big metal suit.

然後說到《The Hurt Locker》得再提一次，是的，他花了很多時間穿著那套八十磅重的金屬拆彈服拍攝。

So to Joss Whedon's Avegners Assemble, this month's superhero orgy (a convocation of Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Loki, Captain Birdseye and so on), which has taken several prequels just to set up and combines assorted oddballs in a battle against Armageddon. It clearly makes little sense: Renner himself admits the arsenal of tranquillisers, explosives and grappling hooks his archer Hawkeye uses "stretches the imagination a bit". In the hands of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Whedon, however, there is hope that the heroice match-up, originally published in 1963, will be more subtle than the bodysuits worn by Sarlett Johnasson's token sexpot, Black Widow, suggest.
Joss Whedon的復仇者成員大集合，這個月我們會在電影院看到的超級英雄狂歡趴(召集對象有鋼鐵人、浩克、美國隊長、Thor、Loki、Captain Birdseye，等等等)；之前的幾部相關電影作品，都是為了建立起Avengers的故事觀，把這群奇人集合起來，讓他們在這部電影裡共同對抗Armageddon。很清楚能看出這點：Renner本人也承認一卡車的鎮靜劑庫存、爆炸和擄獲纏繞他飾演的弓手Hawkeye，讓這角色得「發揮多一點想像力」。
由創造了《吸血鬼獵人巴菲》(Buffy the Vampire Slayer)的Whedon掌舵，不論如何，我想我們可以期待這部改編自1963年原創漫畫的超級英雄大集合電影，可以比Sarlett Johansson的性感標幟緊身裝更有看頭。

"I was familiar with the main characters, like Captain America, but I didn't read comics as a kid," Renner says, slumped back in his chair. "I think being unfamiliar with Hawkeye was a benefit for me, because I had no preconceived ideas about the character. He's alone in the game, an outcast and a loner. He's a lone-wolf sort of character, so he's not a team player, but will be there if needed." Perefect.
「我熟悉那幾個主要的英雄角色，比如說美國隊長；不過我小時候不看漫畫的。」Renner一面說，一面往後靠上椅背。「不熟Hawkeye這個角色，我覺得對我而言反而是個好處，這樣我對這個角色沒有任何先入為主的觀念。他在行動中獨來獨往，是個孤兒，是個獨行俠。像狼一樣離群索居那種角色，他不習慣團隊合作，不過如果團隊需要他，他會加入然後做好自己的工作。」完美的設定。

Renner was born in Modesto, California, an agricultural community where "pretty much all the almonds and peaches and garlic" are grown, as are the grapes for Gallo wine, the one always on offer in supermarkets. Home to George Lucas and the indie music legends Grandaddy, it offered a happy upbringing with his mother, Valerie, father, Lee, and five younger siblings. This is as much as you will learn about his private life. Earlier this month, he told The Hollywood Reporter: "I want my personal life to be personal...How about I go peek in your window, take what underwear you wore last night, whose husband you were f***ing, and shove that in the megaphone throughout your neighbourhood? How does that feel?" As with George Clooney, then, his is a life you'll learn about through his work.

"I stumbled on acting in the junior college I went to in Modesto," Renner says, stretching to shake off the sleepiness of two-day-old jet lag. "I was fumbling around as a student, trying to figure out what the heck I wanted to study, and selected this acting class. And eventually I became okay at it, I guess." In 1993, when the fledgling performer needed to find a bigger arts community, he moved 300 miles to LA, where, apparently, they have a decent-sized movie business.

The problem with Hollywood, though, is that every wannabe goes there, so Renner spent the 1990s in low-key TV and the Noughties slowly building up recognition through films such as Dahmer, SWAT, North Country and The Assassination of Jesse James. Then he was gifted Bigelow's breakthrough. "I was working a lot, but never really getting the opportunity to get a big lead role," he says of the past decade. "I was doing the supporting character. Then I had the opportunity to do The Hurt Locker, and something like that usually goes to Russell Crowe, not to actor like me at that time. It was an amazing opportunity."

Since then, his rise has been relentless. There's a sense, not of the expectancy that comes from acting in big roles for years, but of relief and a desire to make his name now his career allows him to do so. The stars of Avengers Assemble--vying with the latest Batman, The Dark Knight Rises, to be the biggest blockbuster of the summer--are Robert Downey Jr and Johansson, but in August Renner will be solely responsible for selling a new Bourne series. He plays Aaron Cross, while Tony Gilroy--who wrote the original trilogy and driected the classy Michael Clayton-- takes over from Paul Greengrass behind the camera.

It's another spy, less than a year after Mission:Impossible, but the soon-to-be-superstar said he thought for only "three seconds" before realising the two franchises are different enough, Bourne being more dramatic, more visceral. "It's not a prequel, not a reboot, but it keeps Bourne in the title so people know it's a Bourne movie and will have that same tone, pace, composition of shot, realism," he explains. Unsurprisingly, the film leave the story open for Damon's Jason to return, probably with a bump on the head that means he forgets who he is all over again.

Financial burden lifted, big movies "knocked out", now come the choices for Renner, who has set up a production company, The Combine, using the new money. He has no interest in writing --"a timesuck"-- so instead may appear alongside his Avengers co-star Johansson on the Broadway stage for an adaptation of Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, possibly on screen in The Counselor (Cormac McCarthy's first origianl screenplay, directed by Ridley Scott), definitely in Low Life, set in early 1900s on Ellis Island, directed by the New York art-house darling James Gray and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard. "It's not an action movie, which at this point, from where I'm sitting, is a nice thing,"he says. "I can take a break on my body and focus on work and character. That's refreshing."

He's intense, tellingly most proud of his titular work in the little-seen Dahmer(a 2002 serial-killer nasty, for which he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award), Ben Affleck's underrated cops'n'robbers thriller The Town, which earned him an Oscar nod, and, of course, The Hurt Locker. But he's smart, too, understanding the system that controls him and how the wider availability of film on the internet, and the economic climate, have changed the industry's landscape. Gone is the era of ambitious adult fare such as The French Connection--a film Renner mentions twice in our 45 minutes. If you want to make one like that, you need dozens of the others.

"That's why it's franchise movies and superhero movies," he says, leaning forward like a child in class when the one question they know the answer to has come up. "These studios have to keep in business to keep the lights on, but there's room out there for cinema not relying on visual effects to help you tell your story, and that's cheaper than CGI, or 3D, or whatever. That's what I want, I'm an audience member, for Christ's sake. I want to go to movies and be invested in these guys, and there's not a lot of time spent on that kind of stuff. But there needs to be long enough spent so you care about the characters jumping out of that building. I mean, if you don't care, then it's 'F***ing jump out of the building and die, who cares, you asshole'."
Maybe his heght(5ft 10in) was one reason the star/producer Tom Cruise (5ft 7in) cast him alongside his Ethan Hunt in the fourth Mission: Impossible. After all, you can't take on terrorism in a pair of platform heels, and Cruise is long enough in the tooth to know that, these days, he needs ensemble casts to make his star roles work. His appeal is from the 1980s, when Hollywood was a lighter, more fairy-tale place. He needs cool, cynical foils to his rampant enthusiasm, and Renner is the best around-- a throwback to when movie stars didn't give a damn and didn't mind people knowing they didn't give a damn.

*just mark these words, how can you not love this guy? 他完成了自己在職業上追求的夢，現在這是他對電影的夢。他總是夠聰明也夠現實，然後他最帥氣的部分就是：他敢挑戰現實，而且是烙狠話的那種：不然，你就跳下去死吧。
或許他的身高(五尺十吋)是主演兼製作人Tom Cruise(五尺七吋)選他參演第四部MI，讓他和系列主角Ethan Hunt共同演出的原因。畢竟，你不能穿著厚底高跟鞋去打擊恐怖主義嘛？而Cruise的年資也讓他相當清楚，最近這幾年，他得集合不同類型的演員合作這部續作，才能持續他的明星光環。他的明星魅力建立於1980年代，當時好萊塢還是個光明一些，保留多一些童話故事的純真的地方。現在，他需要又酷又有個性的配角來襯托他膨湃的熱情與興奮，而Renner是周遭最好的人選－－仍舊擁有古早年代演員特質的存在：不在乎別人怎麼看，也不在乎讓別人知道他們其實不在乎。

Moonlight Sonata), he seems more animated about the hotel's furnishings or Boris bikes("They'd work really well in LA") than much of his work. So he acts in spite of himself, doing for the latest Mission: Impossible and, hopefully, the rest of his tentpole hits what William H Macy did for Jusrassic Park III or Cate Blanchett the last Indiana Jones. He makes silly films intelligible.

Cover Story果然不好譯。
然後我現在可以理解為什麼英文原文書都那樣小小一本，然後譯成中文書的時候就厚厚一大本又重得要死了。(這是為什麼我會讀原文書的原因：方便攜帶…←竟然就為這理由)
你真的要幫它加字，有的時候甚至得加詞。然後就越加越長越長越長越長越長……
這篇我譯得比較大膽。因為記者本身也用字比較俏皮的感覺(是蘋果嗎為何我一直想到蘋果，賤賤的感覺…|||||)，但我從來很難去重現比較俏皮的筆調。比較像是「我自己再重寫一遍」，以讀得順為主。
對不起我這篇有的沒有的吐槽很多也很吵。
最近是雜誌大豐收，但我的時間少得可憐。
因為太想睡覺的關係打字老是會漏打某個字母(或許Sam Rockwell那篇就是這樣來的…我好像還把某人的名字少打一個F…)，任何的錯字什麼的都不好意思。
最後我忘記到底我想講什麼了…|||||
